On May 15th Sheriff Miller selected MEDIKO, Inc. as the new medical provider for detainees at the Buncombe County Detention Facility. MEDIKO will provide medical, dental, mental health, pharmacy and medical laboratory services to detainees as part of a two-year contract that will begin on July 1st.
“The quality of services, staffing and care that MEDIKO will offer at our Detention Facility is something that demonstrates we can improve how our criminal justice system operates,” says Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller.
The staffing provided by MEDIKO will increase our capacity to a minimum staffing level of 13.5 Full-time Equivalent (FTE) positions including:
A Registered Nurse (RN) and a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the facility 24 hours a day.A Dentist and Dental Assistant working one day a week to service detainees.

“A key component of our operations at the Detention Facility is providing quality health care services to our detainees and with MEDIKO we are taking a step forward,” says Major Tony Gould, Facility Administrator for the Buncombe County Detention Facility.
The monthly cost for services and staffing also includes all general medical supplies used in the medical clinic at the BCDF. The monthly compensation structure is based on the average daily population (ADP) per month as follows:
ADP of 350 to 450 detainees – $131,937.42ADP of 450 to 550 detainees – $141,007.07ADP of 550 to 650 detainees – $170,537.67
MEDIKO will also support the Medically-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program launched earlier this year by the Sheriff’s Office with 2.1 FTE positions at an annual cost of $232,432.
The selection of a new medical vendor for the Detention Facility is the result of a months long Request for Proposal (RFP) process that resulted in four vendors submitting bids. The RFP was issued on November 4, 2019 on the Buncombe County website.
