Meet the cast of ‘How I Became a Pirate’ at Malaprop’s, July 24

PRESS RELEASE FROM ASHEVILLE CREATIVE ARTS:

Co-Founders Abby Felder and Robbie Jaeger, with resident artists Jonesalee, announce the continuation of Asheville Creative Arts’ (ACA) 4th season with the swash-buckling musical, HOW I BECAME A PIRATE, with book, music and lyrics by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, based upon the book by Melinda Long and illustrations by David Shannon, directed and choreographed by Robbie Jaeger, with assistant direction and stage management by Katie Jones.

HOW I BECAME A PIRATE will run from August 4-14, 2016, at Magnetic 375 in the River Arts District. Tickets, available at ACA’s website www.ashevillecreativearts.org, are $23 for adults, $12 for students, with special weekday performances for camp and homeschool groups where tickets are only $7 and include a study guide created by longtime educator, Stephanie Wilder. Special events include a chance to meet the cast hosted by Malaprops Bookstore/Cafe (55 Haywood Street) on Sunday July 24 at 3pm.

With HOW I BECAME A PIRATE audiences will sail off on a fantastic musical excursion. When a band of comical pirates lands on the “beach” looking for an extra digger to join their crew, Braid Beard, played by local favorite, Rock Eblen, and his pirate mates played by Tiffany Renee Bear, Tristan Cameron, and Kelsey Sewell, enlist young Jeremy Jacob, played by Reed Atherton, to help them find the perfect spot to bury their treasure. The whole family will love this delightful and swashbuckling musical adventure. Yo-ho and Arrgh!

“We are delighted this musical presents our first opportunity to work with a young actor, 11 year-old Reed Atherton, who will portray Jeremy Jacob, and rounds out our cast of professional adult actors” says Robbie Jaeger. “Including Reed goes to the heart of the theme of play, and ACA’s mission, in which a young person’s imagination presents a portal to a world where anything is possible,” says Abby Felder.

ACA’s work has been called “Dazzling!” by the Mountain Xpress and “Excellent!” by the Asheville Citizen Times, and HOW I BECAME A PIRATE, which according to The Washington Post is “a funny, sweet-tempered musical” will continue the company’s signature style of creating theatre that is as enjoyable to parents as it is to their children, which was established with previous hits, A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD, CHARLOTTE’S WEB, and DON’T COUNT YOUR CHICKENS UNTIL THEY CRY WOLF.

PIRATE’s creative team includes costumes by Caroline Bower, props by Chifferobe Home and Garden, sound by Jonesalee, sets by Ryan Maloney and lights by Eric Winkenwerder and Barbara Berry.
