Moffitt and King dispute Turner’s allegations of threats and bribe

Here’s a couple excerpts from local media outlets about an unfolding conflict between Democrat Brian Turner and incumbent Republican Tim Moffitt, who are both vying to represent district 116 in the North Carolina Statehouse. Turner alleges that Moffitt tried to threaten him and offer him a job in exchange for dropping out of the race. Moffitt and GOP Buncombe County Commissioner David King, who also attended the private meeting, deny those allegations.

Excerpt from WWNC’s website:

The Democratic candidate for NC House District 116 [Brian Turner] says his Republican opponent [Tim Moffitt] offered him a job in exchange for dropping out of the race. …

Turner said Moffitt suggested Turner could serve the public in another manner – such as working for UNC-TV. According to Turner, Moffitt said the entire public television operation might even be brought from Raleigh to Asheville.

Later, Turner said Moffitt warned him of third-party groups that would “nuke” him during the campaign and that he should consider the toll this might take on his wife and daughter.

Via Asheville Citizen-Times:

A Republican Buncombe County commissioner who witnessed a meeting between Democratic House candidate Brian Turner and incumbent Republican Rep. Tim Moffitt said Thursday that there was no bribe offered or threat made, as has been alleged.

He said he is speaking out about the meeting, which was supposed to be private, to set the record straight about what was said.

“First of all there was no job offer, there was no bribe,” King said Thursday. “That did not happen.” …

The veteran Republican lawmaker [Moffitt] disputes Turner’s underlying allegation.

If there was a recording of this meeting, the air it. Otherwise, it’s ‘he said’ versus ‘he & he said’. So then it gets down to: which of the two has a history of being more honest vs. dishonest?

This appears to be a planned attack on Representative Moffitt’s character on the part of candidate Brian Turner based on his version
of what Rep. Moffitt said at a “private” meeting with him and witnessed by Buncombe County
Commissioner King. It should be interesting to learn the truth as to what really
transpired between these two individuals. Misrepresenting and lying about what a person says is “SCANDAL”. The person perpetuating the scandal can be brought up on charges in court and anyone else participating in said “SCANDAL” is equally guilty. I hope the media publicizes Commissioner King’s comments on the Pete Kaliner show today so that we will all know what was actually said by Rep. Moffitt to Brian Turner
    at this meeting.

Wow. That doesn’t even deserve a response.

Scandal: “an action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage.”

Assuming for a moment that only two Republicans are in possession of “the truth”, and that Mr. Turner is engaged in this supposed “planned attack”, it hardly rises to the definition of a ‘scandal’. However, if Mr. Turner is right, then an effort by the Water Thief to derail an opponents ability to run for office by bribery or threat comes a lot closer to meeting the word’s definition.

These days of smart phones make recording a conversation incredibly easy. Course the agrieved party will always accuse you of doctoring the recording….but there are ways to review a recording to ascertain if it’s been altered in anyway. Raw recording is proof positive of what transpired.

A voice memo (iPhone) is a snap to record, and in NC you do not need the other person’s ok to do so.

    Precisely.

Mr Peck, as usual, expresses the pith and substance of the situation well. Mr Moffitt’s character – or, at least, a glaring deficit in Mr Moffitt’s character – is, indeed, under attack.

People who lie a lot eventually wind up getting deposed under oath. Funny how that works.

Mr Peck is such a keen observer. He should run for public office.
