Montford Park Players to hold auditions for Shakespeare’s As You Like It, May 30-31

The Montford Park Players will hold auditions for the theatrical group’s production of As You Like It on Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre, with musician and singer auditions scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, from 5-9 p.m. The production, directed by Adrian Suskauer, opens Friday, Sept. 4, in the same theatre.

“One of the reasons that As You Like It is such a wonderful play is because of the love that went into writing the characters, especially those living in the country,” says Suskauer. “Unusually for theatre of the time, the pastoral characters speak in blank verse while the higher ranking members of the court speak in prose. The effect that this switch in dialogue creates is to exalt simple country folk, which is what I am setting out to do with this production. The people of the court will be dressed in Elizabethan garb, while the residents of the Forest of Arden will be clad as traditional Appalachian people. The music, which is being composed by our very own Robert Edwards, will highlight the similarities between these two cultures by combining the Shakespearean lyrics with Appalachian sound and instruments. By doing this I hope to celebrate both our mountain culture and the Bard himself!”
