APD seeking help finding driver who struck moped, fled scene

Witnesses at the scene told APD patrol officers that the suspect was driving a late-model red/burgundy pickup truck, possibly with a raised suspension.

UPDATE (April 15, 2022): The original person of interest has been exonerated as a suspect. The Asheville Police Department is still asking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect or vehicle, described as a model red/burgundy pickup truck, possibly with a raised suspension.

(April 14, 2022 )Asheville Police are asking the public’s help to identify a man driving a truck who struck a moped and fled the scene. The driver was ejected from the moped and sent to the hospital with multiple serious injuries.

A driver on the moped was traveling east on NC-146 (Long Shoals Road) near the intersection of CP & L Drive (in front of Ingles) at 10:27 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6. The suspect driving a truck struck the moped, and according to witnesses, ran over the moped, before fleeing the scene. Witnesses said he continued traveling eastbound on Long Shoals Road.

The driver of the moped, a 39-year-old male, was transported to Mission Hospital in critical condition on life support, but he is now in stable condition.

Witnesses at the scene told APD patrol officers that the suspect was driving a late-model red/burgundy pickup truck, possibly with a raised suspension.

After further investigation, APD’s Traffic Safety Unit was able to obtain surveillance video at a nearby business, showing the suspect exit the business just prior to the crash.
