N.C. Mountain State Fair will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 12

Press release from N.C. Mountain State Fair:

FLETCHER – The 2017 N.C. Mountain State Fair will reopen Tuesday at 3 p.m. on its regular schedule. The fair was closed Monday due to inclement weather related to Hurricane Irma. Fair officials inspected the fairgrounds Tuesday morning with local safety personnel and law enforcement.

“We were fortunate to be spared the brunt of the storm on Monday,” said fair manager Matt Buchanan. “We’ll be ready to open this afternoon on our normal schedule.”

Tuesday is WLOS Family Day at the N.C. Mountain State Fair. Children 12 and under can enjoy unlimited rides all day for $20. In addition, the fair will hold an ice cream eating contest at 6:30 p.m. in the Davis Event Center. Fair-goers interested in participating are asked to register before 6 p.m. Trophies will be awarded in the following categories: ages 5-7; ages 8-12; ages 13-17; ages 18 and older.

Monday’s closure did affect some competitions on the fairgrounds. The Open Brahman and Open All Breed Heifer shows were canceled. The pork cooking contest, originally scheduled for Monday night, has been moved to Wednesday. Participants can drop off their pork dishes for judging between 6 and 7 p.m. Even though the fair was closed, life continued at the fairgrounds Monday – two calves were born in the Moo-ternity Ward before the storm.
