NC DOT to reconsider denial of request to name Smoky Park Bridge in honor of Captain Bowen

according to WHNS-TV,
Following a fatal July fire, many in Asheville and Buncombe County hoped a bridge would be named for the fallen fire captain who’s life it claimed – until state laws got in the way.

But state officials said they are reconsidering the resolution. The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Road Naming Committee unanimously approved renaming the Smoky Park Bridge on Interstate 240 that goes over the French Broad River in Capt. Jeff Bowen’s honor.

DOT officials said the resolution will go before the full North Carolina Board of Transportation Thursday, and if approved, the bridge would be renamed. The new name would go into effect immediately, though it would take time for signs to be made.

The proposal to rename the bridge was first put forward in December by the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.
