No War on Women – Asheville to host rally for abortion rights

Press release is from No War on Women – Asheville:

What: Rally for abortion rights

When: Monday, Sep. 6, 3 pm

Where: Pack Square, Downtown Asheville

Who: Women, men, trans and non binary people all welcome

Facebook event page: https://facebook.com/events/s/speak-out-for-reproductive-fre/367588128166157/

Background: On Wednesday, Sep. 1, right before midnight, the Supreme Court issued a stunning but not surprising decision to let stand the Texas abortion ban which makes it illegal for women to get abortions past six weeks, before most women even know they are pregnant.

We are holding a speakout at Pack Square on Labor Day to protest this decision, which will take us back 50 years to the last century when privileged women could afford to fly to other states or even countries to get abortions and poor women were relegated to illegal often unsafe back alley abortions.

Among several speakers, State Senator Julie Mayfield will speak about what the NC Democrats are doing in the state legislature to fight the NC version of the fetal heartbeat bill. State Representative Susan Fisher will talk about what is planned in the US Congress to pass a law codifying abortion rights and how passing the ERA is also crucial to securing women’s rights.  Other speakers will tie this issue to Medicare for All, as abortion is health care, and racial justice due to the disproportionate affect this will have on women of color.
