The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) is providing Halloween Pet Safety tips and information in light of the holiday on Monday. Making pet owners aware of the potential dangers of this holiday will ensure that every member of the family is able to celebrate safely.
NCVMA president and local veterinarian Dr. Tom Kuhn recommends the following tips for keeping pets safe and calm this Halloween:
Never feed your pets candy or chocolate. Due to the xylitol and theobromine found in candy and chocolate, digesting these treats can result in serious health complications for your pets. Contact your veterinarian in case of emergency.
Make sure your pet’s microchip and identification information is up-to-date. If your pet gets loose during your Halloween festivities, you’ll have a better chance of bringing them home safety if their identification is current.
Keep pets away from loud noises and trick-or-treaters. Scary costumes and noises will cause anxiety and stress among pets, so it’s best to remove them from those situations.
Pet costumes should be monitored. Don’t force your pet into wearing anything restricting or heavy. If they seem uncomfortable in their costume, it is recommended that it be removed.If your pet is in danger or is experiencing medical issues, please contact your local veterinarian or visit ncvma.org for helpful resources.
“Halloween can be a fun yet hectic holiday, so educating pet owners on the things that could potentially put their animals in danger is an important responsibility that we feel as veterinarians,” said Dr. Tom Kuhn, president of the NCVMA.
