OPT-IN to host public meetings through Oct. 10

Various dates now through Oct 10: Southwestern North Carolina Opportunity Initiative (OPT-IN) public meetings. The public is invited to one of several regional presentations and discussions of this visioning project for the seven counties in the far-western part of the region.

Sept 30: Deadline for entries in MAP (Media Arts Project) COMPRESS FEST. Submissions of original videos, films and other motion media of no longer than 5 minutes sought; winner screened at the festival on Nov 14 at Fine Arts Theatre, Asheville.

Oct 1-2, 9am-5pm: Art Business Bootcamp – A-B Tech Enka Campus, Candler. AdvantageWest will be among the presenters at this event sponsored by the Art Business Institute and HandMade in America.
Oct 4-6: Asheville Startup Weekend – A-B Tech Enka Campus, Candler. Convert an idea into an operating business in 54 hours.

Oct 5, 9am-2pm: Introduction to Filmmaking – NYS3, Asheville. Four-week class, Saturdays through Oct 26. This is one of a long list of fall classes available for adults and youth.

Oct 12: Deadline for film submissions to Howl-o-Palooza – Lenoir. Submissions of horror, thriller, or suspense should be less than 20 minutes in length, and fit for public consumption. Top films to be screened during the Howl-o-Palooza festival on Oct 26.

Oct 17, 2pm: AdvantageWest Board of Directors – AdvantageWest offices, adjacent to Asheville Regional Airport. Board meetings are open to the public. Contact Amanda Baranski, 828.687.7234.

Nov 1, 9am-3:30pm: ASAP’s Local Food in Rural WNC Forum – UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center. A discussion of the local food systems in rural communities across WNC.

Nov 16, 10am: SiteDart Awesome Business Idea Competition – Drake Education Center, Franklin. Entrepreneurs have 90 seconds to pitch their ideas; prize money of $1500.
