Press release from LifeMinistries:
In June, 2008, Abernethy United Methodist Church launched a new outreach ministry serving low income families struggling to care for their children called the Baby Equipment and Resource Closet ( B.E.A.R.). The ministry reaches out to single parents and families living at or below poverty level, expectant parents, foster parents, and grandparents raising grandchildren who are struggling to provide clothing, baby equipment, bedding, and hygiene products for their babies and small children by providing these items for free.
“The needs in the local community have grown and the Baby Equipment and Resource Closet needs more ‘hands-on’ volunteers to sustain this vital outreach,” states Mike Davis, who has been a lead volunteer for many years. The outreach is open the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays every month from 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m.. Each Monday from 10-12 is a prep day before opening on Wednesdays. Volunteer opportunities include sorting, sizing, and hanging donated clothing items, cleaning and organizing baby equipment, greeting and interviewing clients, completing and fulfilling client needs list, and light record keeping. Bilingual-Spanish is helpful.
If you have a passion for community and desire to help children and can offer 2-3 hours for one or two days a month, the B.E.A.R. Closet invites you to attend a brief meeting where details of the outreach and service opportunities will be shared. A tour of the community outreach and refreshments will be provided. For more information contact Mike Davis at 828-254-2612 (bearclosetaumc@yahoo.com) or go to bearcloset.org.
