Park Service announces upcoming hikes on the Parkway

Press releases from the National Park Service:

Special after hours hike, “In the Forests of the Night”:

Join Parkway rangers at 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 7th for an easy, 2 mile hike on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and discover how animals adapt to life at night. Nocturnal animals such as owls, bats, and bobcats survive and thrive in the dark using their amazingly specialized senses.

Meet at Milepost 388.8 on the Parkway near Hendersonville Road (Highway 25). There is a gravel area for parking just south of the gate at the Highway 25 exit.

The hike of the week, “Walking Towards Wilderness”:

The Blue Ridge Parkway passes through some of the wildest forests in the United States, including the Shining Rock and Middle Prong Wilderness Areas. Hiking on the Art Loeb Trail, you’d come to a place that is protected from technology and modernization. But what attracts people to these “empty” places? And what do you see and do when you get there? Join Parkway rangers at 10:00 am on Friday, July 8th for an easy-to-moderate, 2 mile round-trip hike and learn about our neighbors in Pisgah National Forest.

The hike will begin approximately 0.7 mile off the Parkway on the Black Balsam Road (F.S. Road 816), which turns off the Parkway at Milepost 420.2, about 1 mile south of Graveyard Fields. Wear good hiking shoes, bring water, and be prepared for changeable weather.
