Petition to rename The Montford Community Center to The Tempie Avery Community Center

Press release:

The City of Asheville’s African American Heritage Commission and Historic Resources Commission have given their recommendations to approve renaming the Montford Community Center on Pearson Drive as the Tempie Avery Community Center. Tempie was a community nurse and midwife, and a freed slave of the Woodfin family who deeded that property to her in 1868.

Asheville City residents who are registered voters are invited to sign the supporting petition that is posted on a bulletin board just inside the Montford Community Center during business hours. Call 828.279.2341 for information.
