PLS to Feature “Nun on the Bus” Sister Simone Campbell as Keynote Speaker for October 6th Poverty Forum

Sister Brings Attention to Social Issues Impacting People Living In Poverty Including  Income Inequality, Raising the Minimum Wage

WHO:  Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, and NETWORK’s “Nuns on the Bus” will visit Asheville on Monday, October 6th to speak at Pisgah Legal Services 4th Annual Poverty Forum.

Executive director for NETWORK, a National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, Sister Campbell is a religious leader, attorney, author and noted speaker with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change. She was instrumental in organizing the “Nuns on the Bus” tour of nine states to oppose the budget approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, which was detrimental to people in need. She also wrote the “Nuns’ Letter,” considered by many as critically important in convincing Congress to support the Affordable Care Act.

Sister Simone Campbell has received numerous awards for her work, including the “Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Award” and the “Defender of Democracy Award. She is a dynamic speaker who has appeared on The Colbert Report, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and PBS with Bill Moyers.

Since 1978, Pisgah Legal Services has provided free civil legal aid to help low-income people meet their basic needs, such as protection from domestic violence, avoiding homelessness, and accessing health care and subsistence income.  PLS has 18 attorneys on staff, and relies heavily on the pro bono legal services of 300+ volunteer attorneys. PLS’ main service area includes six WNC counties, with offices in Asheville, Hendersonville, and Spindale. Last year PLS served more than 14,000 people.

5:30 pm – Reception at Pack Place Lobby; 7:00 pm – Forum at Diana Wortham Theatre

Tickets: $50/person for reception and forum; $15/person for forum alone
