PlantPure Nation Documentary Comes to Asheville

Press release:

PlantPure Nation, a groundbreaking documentary by Nelson Campbell with the production/writing team from the acclaimed Forks Over Knives, comes to Asheville for a special one-night screening on Thursday, November 5th, at the Regal Biltmore Grand 15. Showtime is at 7 pm followed by a Q&A with director Nelson Campbell.

PlantPure Nation follows the stories of three people working to spread the word about the incredible healing effects of plant-based nutrition, in the face of great opposition. When the filmmaker’s father, nutritional scientist and co-author of The China Study, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, inspires Kentucky State Representative Tom Riner to propose a pilot program documenting the health benefits of a plant-based diet, they inadvertently set in motion a series of events that expose powerful forces opposed to the diet. After industry lobbyists kill the pilot program, the filmmaker decides to try his own grassroots approach in his hometown of Mebane, North Carolina. The results are staggering.

PlantPure Nation examines the political and economic factors that suppress information on the benefits of plant-based nutrition, while making the connections to larger issues such as medical practice, farming, and food deserts. Featuring the leading world-renowned experts, including doctors and authors who speak on the topic, PlantPure Nation further exposes the roadblocks standing in the way of wider recognition of the healing powers of a plant-based diet.

Beyond the documentary, the filmmakers are using PlantPure Nation as a springboard to create a broader grassroots movement. Members of these chapters will help plant seeds of change around the message of plant-based nutrition in their communities. One tool they will use to give people the experience of a whole-food, plant-based diet will be the same 10-day Jumpstart program featured in the film.

A companion to the documentary, The PlantPure Nation Cookbook, authored by Kim Campbell, includes more than 150 whole-food, plant-based recipes as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the film.

“After traveling this country the past couple of months with my dad, I have heard story after story of personal change and courageous actions to promote this health message, underscoring the need for a movement that leverages the contributions of everyone,” said the film’s writer-director, Nelson Campbell.

“We are ready to launch a meaningful movement by raising awareness and offering options for individuals to take control of their health,” added Dr. T. Colin Campbell.

PlantPure Nation was filmed across the U.S. and features Steve Forbes Jr. (editor in chief, Forbes magazine), Dr. T. Colin Campbell (co-author, The China Study), Dr. Neal Barnard (founder and president, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine), and Dr. Michael Greger (director of public health and animal agriculture, Humane Society of the United States). The production team includes producer John Corry and writer Lee Fulkerson from the acclaimed documentary film Forks Over Knives.
