Rainbow Community School to honor veterans and observe Armistice Day, Nov. 11

Press release from Rainbow Community School:

Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11th. This day is recognized by many allied nations and overlaps with both Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. Armistice Day is significant because it is the day the World War I allies and Germany signed an armistice, or cessation of hostilities. This signed agreement became official on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, President Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

The staff, students and parents of Rainbow Community School in West Asheville, North Carolina will join other schools, businesses and organizations on November 11th at 11:00 a.m. to ring out for peace in honor of Armistice Day. The bells each student will be ringing will not only represent the impact and importance of this signed treaty but will also symbolize the continued need for peace and understanding between all people and all nations.

Join Rainbow Community School by stepping outside at 11:00 a.m. on November 11th and ring a bell for peace.
