Press release:
Read-A-Thon Fundraiser to Support New Playground at Atkinson Elementary
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 27, 2016) – More than 350 Atkinson Elementary students will each grab a book and gather at their school track this Friday to kick off their 2016 Read-a-Thon, which is the first official fundraiser tied to the school PTO’s campaign to update its playground.
Known as “Play it Forward,” the campaign will be an ongoing, multi-year effort to raise funds to support the purchase of needed playground equipment in order to create a safe, fun environment for all grades to enjoy.
On Sept. 30, at 2 p.m., every student – from kindergarteners just learning to read to fifth graders mastering chapter books – will hit the track, find their spots, and read together for about 10 minutes, logging their time for pledging purposes.
The Atkinson Elementary School Read-a-Thon will run from September 30 through October 21, with a fundraising goal of $12,000. Students will receive pledges for the number of minutes they read each day. All funds raised from the Read-a-Thon will go to support “Play it Forward,” the school’s playground Improvement project. There will be prizes for top readers and top fundraisers.
“What an amazing sight it will be to see more than 350 children enjoying a good book,” said Mark Page, principal of Atkinson Elementary. “We encourage friends and family members to attend and show their support as well; just don’t forget to bring your book!”
Community and corporate sponsors interested in supporting the Read-a-Thon or the “Play it Forward” playground campaign should contact the school at 828-697-4755 for more information.
