Rev. Erin Maxfield-Steele joins St. George’s Episcopal Church

Press release from Noel Schwartz of St. George’s Episcopal Church:

The vestry of St. George’s Episcopal Church is delighted to announce that The Rev. Erin Maxfield-Steele has accepted a call to be our Priest-in-Charge beginning October 1. She sent a message to us saying that she is “thanking God for the chance to be your priest and to get to know you. What a gift to be invited into this community and into the Spirit’s work in your midst!”

Erin comes to us from the Church of the Good Shepherd where she serves as Curate. A graduate of Vanderbilt Divinity School and Virginia Theological Seminary and native of the mountains of Virginia, she has also spent her career before ordination in service to others, including work in substance abuse treatment, refugee resettlement, and bilingual service work. Her interests include support of Latinx congregations, children’s spirituality, and building authentic, reverent liturgy.

Erin’s husband, Allyn, is also a graduate of Vanderbilt Divinity School, where the two met. He is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and is currently the co-executive director of the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, TN.

On the future of the Church, she writes, “The present Church is beautifully complex, and God’s people both inside and outside of the Church are teaching us what it means to love one another more fully. . . . I sense a growing urgency that we respond to the Spirit’s invitation to a greater and more radical love.”

Please join us in welcoming her to the West Asheville community and St. George’s on Sunday, October 7. Service begins at 10:30am with a reception following at about 11:45. Neighbors and community members are invited to attend both events.
