Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site managers and the Board of Directors of the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara will share park and fundraising updates at a joint public meeting on Wednesday, March 27, from 5:00-7:00 pm, at the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce. The park’s 2019 Writer-in-Residence, Susan Polizzotto, will give a short presentation about her work and time at the park.
Superintendent Polly Angelakis, and other park managers will share updates about preservation projects and upcoming events and programs. “We have lots of exciting projects and events in the works, especially given our new amphitheater and completion of the house restoration and re-furnishing. We’re excited to share our plans,” said Angelakis.
The Friends will reaffirm their mission and share ways to support the park; provide financial and operational updates; review 2019 goals; and elect officers. “We look forward to sharing with our community the exciting ways the Friends help carry on the Sandburg legacy and support the park,” said Friends President Annette Dubrouillet. “We also hope to meet and inspire new Friends and potential new board members.”
Ms. Polizzotto, whose residence is supported by the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara is currently writing a novel, The Spider and the Swallow, inspired by true events in the Bering Sea, and a memoir of her seven years on Coast Guard cutters. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard and began writing full time after retiring from active duty. As a meditative practice and way to engage with and celebrate the natural world, Susan enjoys writing haiku. She has studied haiku history and composition with Sensei Kaz Tanahashi, Clark Strand and Natalie Goldberg at the Upaya Institute and Zen Center in Santa Fe, NM and O-shyu-ji (Japanese calligraphy) with Sensei Mitzi Ito in Carolina Beach, NC.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is a unit of the National Park Service.
