State urges voters to “read ballot instructions carefully”

Press release from the N.C. State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement:

The State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement is reminding voters using paper ballots to read the ballot instructions carefully and be sure to vote for the correct number of candidates in each contest. Voters with questions about the instructions should ask a poll worker for help.

When a voter “overvotes” (voting for two candidates in a “Vote for One” contest, for example) that voter’s vote in that contest is not counted. Votes in all other contests will be counted.

When a voter selects too many candidates in a contest, the tabulator will alert the voter of the overvote and give the voter the option to cast the ballot anyway or spoil the ballot and receive a new one.

The State Board is receiving reports from some county boards of elections that some voters are selecting more than one candidate in “Vote for One” contests. All judicial offices are “Vote for One.”

Touch-screen voting machines do not allow voters to vote for too many candidates.
