State environmental agency demands more answers from Duke Energy

Press Release

North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources:

RALEIGH – N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary John Skvarla issued the following statement in response to a letter received today from Duke Energy responding to the department’s request for more information on the company’s coal ash facilities:

“We thank Duke Energy for responding in a timely manner and appreciate the fact that they have taken full responsibility for the Dan River spill, including cleanup of the river, movement of the coal ash pond and damaged by caused by the spill. They also concur with our prioritization that identifies Eden (Dan River), Charlotte (Riverbend), Asheville and Wilmington (Sutton) as high-priority locations that need immediate action.

However, Duke Energy’s response is inadequate. There are far too many questions left unanswered and Duke Energy should provide the information we originally requested, including the estimated costs of cleanup, plans for the future and a detailed timeline. This department is moving forward immediately with mechanisms to not only derive the necessary information, but to also enforce stringent timelines for fulfillment and completion of Duke Energy’s obligations to protect public health and the environment.”

The letter is available on the department’s website at http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/guest/dan-river-spill.

What a steaming pile of disingenuous, butt-covering bilge. This agency has been in the pocket of Duke Energy to the point that:

    “RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)

From recent accounts, (WLOS’ report on CTS, for example) NCDENR is merely around to collect salaries, not protect our precious environment.

I think it far worse than simply collecting salaries. They appear to be a less a state agency charged with protecting our environment than a front group with the ulterior mission of facilitating whatever their paymasters as Duke Energy request.
