PRESS RELEASE FROM CAROLINA JEWS FOR JUSTICE:
This Sunday, October 23, 2016, Jewish communities across North Carolina will work to empower NC voters to get to the polls and be counted this election season. Coordinated by Carolina Jews for Justice, a statewide nonprofit, volunteers from major Jewish institutions in Raleigh, Durham, Asheville, and Greensboro will invest hundreds of hours in a “Day of Action,” phone banking to turn out voters. Members of the Jewish community are deeply committed to ensuring that everyone has the right to vote and have been dismayed by efforts in recent years in North Carolina to suppress the vote.
Carolina Jews for Justice is a local affiliate of Bend the Arc, a national Jewish advocacy organization. Both organizations are engaged in a long-term effort to lift restrictions on voting rights, and to restore equal access to the ballot box.
Phone banks will take place at Temple Beth Or in Raleigh, Congregation Beth HaTephila in Asheville, Jewish Federation/Jewish Family Services of Greensboro, Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem, and the Levin Jewish Community Center of Durham-Chapel Hill. Organizers from Carolina Jews for Justice expect the effort to reach hundreds of voters across the state, particularly newly registered voters who may need help voting for the first time.
“As Jews, we believe our democracy works better for all of our communities when the rights of minorities to participate in the political system are vigorously protected. Barriers that limit or discourage participation — ours, our neighbors’ —violate our basic values of equality and inclusion,” said Debbie Goldstein, President of Carolina Jews for Justice. “That’s why we will be working hard this Sunday to make sure every voter makes their voice heard during this critical election.”
Carolina Jews for Justice is a local, nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy organization. We are fellow North Carolinians who energetically support the right to vote for all people. You can learn more about us online at www.carolinajewsforjustice.org. We do not support any particular candidate or political party.
