Suspect charged in March 5 fatal hit and run

On March 5, 2016, at approximately 6:30 PM, Richard Jared Peters was struck and killed by a vehicle in the parking lot of The Asheville Inn at 1 Acton Circle. After an extensive investigation by detectives with the Major Crimes Unit and Traffic Safety Unit, Louie Anthony Cochran, Jr., 21, of Candler, NC has been arrested and charged with first degree murder for his role in the death of Mr. Peters. Cochran is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center under no bond.
Detectives are still seeking the 2002 Toyota Highlander SUV that was used to commit this crime. Anyone with information on where the vehicle is located is encouraged to contact the Asheville Police Department at (828) 252-1110 or Buncombe County Crime Stoppers at (828) 255-5050.
The Asheville Police Department would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Peters. We would like to thank the members of the public that assisted us during the course of the investigation by providing tips and other information.
Our agency will not be releasing any additional details regarding this case in order to preserve its integrity as it proceeds into the prosecution phase.
