Cherokee, N.C., June 3, 2013 – Each May, Tsali Manor Senior Care on the Cherokee Indian Reservation honors elders across the region at the annual Senior Celebration.
The celebration, now in its 22nd year, acknowledges the value seniors bring to their communities by applauding recent achievements of local elders and recognizing their contributions as productive, active and influential members of society.More than 600 seniors from across the seven surrounding Western North Carolina counties enjoyed this special day with lunch, entertainment and social time with
friends at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort on May 23.“This event is something our Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort volunteers always look forward to,” said Janna Hyatt, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort Community Relations Coordinator. “It’s a great tradition that shows our commitment to honoring the value that elders contribute to our communities.”
This year’s theme, Without a Heart: Mystery in the Smokies, included entertainment
by Cherokee Vice Chief Larry Blythe and Councilman Mike Parker, as well as a mystery show performed by Bittersweet Productions of Asheville, NC. Principal Chief Michell Hicks and Miss Cherokee Karyl Frankiewicz were also on-hand for the celebration. Volunteers from Harrah’s Employees Reaching Out (HERO) program and from Tsali
Manor worked the event.“I know the seniors enjoy the fellowship and great food that Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort provides for the event,” said Deb West, Tsali Manor Program Manager. “Some of our participants remarked that the event reminds them of a prom.”
While Tsali Manor provides services, support and resources to older adults year-round, Older Americans Month is a time to show them special appreciation. Senior Celebration continues to provide an opportunity for elders to come together and share experiences with one another and with people from other generations.
“My favorite part of the day is seeing my neighbors and friends who I haven’t seen in a while,” said Emily Smith of Cherokee. “I’ve been coming for the past several years, and each event is a lot of fun.”
