Ain’t I a Woman? Real Talk on the Metaphysics of Gender – Presentation by Philosopher Robin Dembroff at UNC Asheville on Nov. 14

Robin Dembroff will present a lecture, Ain’t I a Woman? Real Talk on the Metaphysics of Gender, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14 in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith Union in the Grotto. This event, free and open to everyone, will include a response to Dembroff’s argument from UNC Asheville Professor of Philosophy Melissa Burchard and discussion with the audience.

Dembroff, a Princeton University doctoral candidate in philosophy, is the author of the scholarly journal article, What is Sexual Orientation? (Philosopher’s Imprint, 2016).

The only uncontroversial thing about discourse surrounding gender ascriptions is that it is extremely controversial,” says Dembroff. “These controversies, both in everyday and academic contexts, appear to center on questions of what makes someone a man or a woman. I argue that looking to theories of gender to settle questions about who should be ascribed manhood or womanhood is missing the point. What matters for determining ethical gender ascriptions are questions about how we ought to perceive and treat others, and not facts about who is a man or a woman.”

This presentation is sponsored by UNC Asheville student groups, the Philosophy and Political Science Clubs, the UNC Asheville Department of Philosophy, the university’s Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and the Honors Program.
