ELON, NC – Warren Wilson College junior Jasmine Woo has been recognized for outstanding leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities committed to community engagement. Woo is a recipient of the network’s Community Impact Student Award, which honors one student leader at each member school.
Woo is one of 18 students across the state to receive the 2014 award, joining more than 200 college students honored by the organization since the award was first presented in 2006.
A sociology major from San Francisco, Woo explores a range of issues through service. During her first two years at Warren Wilson, she completed more than 500 service hours and several alternative break trips. At the same time, she engaged deeply in the greater community. Jasmine co-led a workshop on the issue of water quality, used an internship experience to design an environmental program for high school youth, and volunteers weekly with Asheville agency Homeward Bound to collect furniture for their housing-first program. As a member of the service program work crew and student assistant for alternative breaks, she also facilitates meaningful service for her peers.
Missy Harris, a coordinator in Warren Wilson’s service program office, said Woo has gone “above and beyond the average student.”
“Jasmine has integrated service as a central part of her life as a student at Warren Wilson. She not only engages in the community herself but also encourages, facilitates and leads others,” Harris said.
Woo and other award winners were honored at North Carolina Campus Compact’s annual student conference Nov. 8 at North Carolina State University. Now in its 21st year, the 2014 conference convened 180 student leaders from 25 campuses in five states, offering participants a slate of workshops focused on leadership best practices and community issues.
North Carolina Campus Compact is a collaborative network of colleges and universities with a shared commitment to educating engaged citizens and strengthening communities. Guided by an executive board of presidents and chancellors, the compact supports member schools through professional development and resources related to civic and community engagement. Founded in 2002, the compact is hosted by Elon University.
