Press release from the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site:
In anticipation of Thomas Wolfe’s birthday celebration in October, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial invites students and teachers to participate in the 2021 “Telling Our Tales” Student Writing Competition. Thomas Wolfe, while best known for his novels, also wrote many short stories for magazines. In this competition, students will submit their own work of fiction inspired by Thomas Wolfe and his short story “One of the Girls in Our Party.” The story first appeared in the January 1935 edition of Scribner’s magazine. This tale, written from the perspective of a Miss Blake, highlights her travels across Europe with a bus group. She recounts her trip while writing a letter home. The story documents their journey, describes Miss Blakes’s tour companions, and their time in Holland with Mr. Vogelsang, a favorite tour guide. Wolfe demonstrates his mastery creatingcharacters in a setting where they encounter and engage in interesting and entertaining activities.
First, second, and third place winners will be chosen from three age groups: Grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Submissions may be hand delivered, postmarked, or emailed by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday October 9th, 2021. Winners will be announced on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021. Cash Awards will be given in each age group.
