Workshop workshop aims to teach kids about racism, racial justice

Press release:

What Can Teachers and Parents Do?

Educators and parents are invited to strengthen their discussions of racism and racial justice with their children.

ASHEVILLE, NC – April 26, 2017 – Odyssey School and Clover Heart Concepts continue integral community discussions with the free workshop series for educators and parents, Teaching Kids about Racism and Racial Justice. The next session in the workshop series, What Can Teachers and Parents Do?, will be held May 2, 2017. All who are interested are welcome to attend. Previous participation is not required.

The upcoming session will focus on strategies to discuss these complex topics. Participants will use design thinking to consider the unmet needs of children in the classroom and at home regarding racism and racial justice. Teachers from four area schools will also demonstrate how they teach kids about racism and racial justice in the K-12 environment.

The event will take place from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Odyssey School in Asheville, North Carolina. All sessions are free and childcare is available. Registration may be completed online or by contacting Odyssey School at learn@odysseycommunity.org or 828.259.3653. Additional information may also be found at the Facebook event: Teaching Kids about Racism + Racial Justice.

The series’ coordinators, Justina Prenatt, LPCA, NCC of Clover Heart Concepts, and Megan McCarter Martell, Executive Director of Programs at Odyssey, hope participants will become more comfortable and confident to encourage children to have a healthy understanding of racial diversity and work toward racial justice.

The first session of the series, What Is Racism?, centered on meaningful discussion that deepened the understanding of racism in our culture. Participants in the second session, How Do We Talk about Race?, learned how to lead conversations based on the developmental stages of children. The last in the series will be held on May 16, 2017 and will celebrate individual diversity and culture.
