Lake Lure isn’t known for tournament skiing, but soon that is going to change. A short distance away from the town’s iconic lake is Mystic Waters, a private ski lake and 162-acre retreat center that opened in 2012. It’s here on this tailored body of water that some of the world’s best water-skiers, like two-time world champion and 2014 Masters Champion Whitney McClintock, will compete on Aug. 23 at the Mystic Waters Ski & Skeet Pro-Am Tournament.
Other pros expected include April Coble Eller, Nicole Arthur, Karen Truelove Krueger, Brian Detrick, Corey Vaughn and Austin Abel, all top-ranked skiers in the world. Along with these top skiers come world-record ski boat drivers, including Tommy Harrington Chief Driver, Chris Eller and Jeff Gilbert.
Mystic Waters offers a unique combination of a tournament water ski lake, extraordinary viewing conditions and proximity to Lake Lure and many large cities in the surrounding area. Lynn Carnes Pitts, event organizer said, “Along with the venue, the tournament format invites skiers of all levels to compete for the Pro-Am prize, which gets more skiers involved in the sport, one of our main goals for hosting this event.”
Whitney McClintock, who is also a fitness coach and will be selling Shakeology smoothies at the event said, “I am super excited about the Mystic Waters Ski & Skeet. Lynn is combining a health fair with the waterskiing to bring my two passions together… And I am pretty excited to shoot skeet for the first time, too – wish me luck!!”
Presented by Carolina Mastercraft with Rutherford Regional Health System in partnership with Lake Norman Ski Club and Paragon School of Shooting, admission to the Mystic Waters Ski & Skeet Pro-Am Tournament is free for the public and is coupled with a health and wellness festival. Attendees can enjoy live, local music, chiropractic and massage therapy vendors, dancing with the A-Lure Dirty Dancing Dancers and Lake Lure Cloggers, interactive tai chi and fly-fishing demonstrations, local food from Vandele Farms, and more.
