Welcome to spring: Here’s where to find your neighborhood tailgate market

The French Broad Co-Op, which is held downtown on Wednesdays, is one of several regional farmers markets that accepts payment through food assistance programs such as EBT. Photo by Hayley Benton

With winter’s cold (mostly) behind us, it’s a great time to welcome in the days of fresh, local produce, meats, eggs and flowers with a visit to a neighborhood farmers market. Western North Carolina is home to a cornucopia of tailgate and farmers markets which offer everything from local food and live music to cooking demonstration and children’s activities. Many also participate in food assistance programs and accept payment through EBT/ SNAP or WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Most area markets will be starting up in the next few weeks, though a few — including the Asheville City Market, the WNC Farmers Market and the Jackson County Farmers Market — are open year-round. With the help of Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, Xpress is providing a roundup of regional markets, including markets accepting food assistance programs. You can find specific start and end dates for the 2014 season for each market by clicking on their description within the map or scrolling through the markets by day of the week. You can also find a calendar view in our Community Calendar.

For more information on area farmers/ tailgate markets, you can also check out ASAP’s Local Food Guide, online or in print.
