Collective publishes Asheville health guide

When it comes to health care, it’s all about knowing where to look, according to members of the Sassafras Health Collective.
“Our idea of having a guide was to have a resource where people had recommended other practitioners, because there’s a sea of practitioners to choose from, and to actually know this person comes recommended, or this person speaks Spanish, or this person is okay with queer people. It’s a good list to show people because we’ve all had negative experiences with doctors and nurses,” said collective member Janet Kent.
The group recently published a health care resource guide that includes information about various health care providers in Asheville. From acupuncture to primary care, the collective wanted inclusion, not exclusion of health care providers.
“I think different kinds of health care work for different people, and there are certain practices that are more appropriate for different conditions,” Kent said. “We just tried to cover whatever health care that people may need to access. We’re trying to include as many people and practices
Though the resource guide is only 14 pages long, Kent said this is just the first edition.
“We’re hoping this is just the beginning and that this guide could become something much bigger,” Kent said. “I’m hoping once it’s out there, that we’ll get more feedback from the community.”
The collective plans to put the guide in various bookstores, health food stores, and co-ops in the area.
