The U.S. defeated Algeria 1-0 with a goal scored in the final minutes of today’s World Cup match. The dramatic win allows the U.S. team to advance to round two of the Cup for the first time since 2002.
Local soccer fans packed downtown Asheville establishments to watch the game and chants of “USA!” could be heard on the streets after the victory. Pictured below: Local soccer fans celebrate the win at the Asheville Pizza Company and Dirty Jack’s.
ESPN has details of today’s match here.
This year’s tournament is being held in South Africa and the next U.S. match is scheduled for Saturday, June 26 at 2:30 p.m. EST.

Thanks for reading through to the end…
We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
Finally, YES, a sports “article”!! Go MntnXpress!!! Good for you!!
So much has happened in the World Cup it has been a shame not even to get a blurb. I’m so proud of our local paper now.
Please, MX, keep reporting on this. Game on Sat. and please report about the “insanity” of the previous two matches.
If you don’t know call me:)
PS Saw many jerseys of other countries being worn in downtown… World Cup is a Big Deal!!!!
You are so right Carrie … the World Cup is the biggest deal on the planet! Go USA and England!
