Local Libertarians ready for new agenda

With some serious internal work now behind them, the Libertarian Party of Buncombe County will elect new leadership at its 2007 convention on Monday, March 26.

“The Libertarian Party as a whole is wrestling with issues of whether to moderate its position a little,” says retiring county chair Carl Milsted (pictured here), who has served as the local spokesperson since 2004. “One reason we haven’t been as [locally] active,” he says, has been that internal debate.

The drift towards more moderate positions, Milsted notes, is chronicled at the Libertarian Reform Caucus Web site. The county group is now poised to emerge from their convention with a new chair and executive committee, potential candidate endorsements, and delegates to the state convention in Hickory, which is set for April 27 through 29.

The local convention takes place at the El Chapala Mexican restaurant on Merrimon Avenue, starting at 7 p.m. on March 26. For more info, call 258-0703 or visit the Buncombe Libertarians’ Web site.
