Tractor-trailer collides with building in West Asheville

Just after noon today, May 25,, a tractor-trailer driver was attempting to turn south onto Brevard Road from Haywood Road. Having just passed several signs stating “No Trucks over 13,000 LBS GVW” sign, he still tried to make the turn.

“This is not the first time this has happened,” says Mr. Whittaker, who operates a second-hand store in the building. “No. sir, this makes three that I know of.”

Trucks have also damaged the Atkinson Furniture Store across the street in the past.

No one was injured, and the damage to the building and the trailer, appears to be minor. The truck was towed off with a heavy-duty tow rig.

It’s a shame that there is no mention here (or on the Citizen Times) about the Fill the Boot fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association that the firefighters are taking part in. You know, given that they are stationed at this intersection and the ensuing traffic impacted their efforts.

I considered putting that in the article, but it did not seem to be part of the story of the truck striking the building. The driver tried to make an argument to the APD officer about the firefighters in the street, but it did not match with what I heard from people who witnessed the event.
We have a story scheduled on the ‘fill the boot’ fundraiser, hopefully without distraction this time.
      Thank you.
