Video-a-Go-Go

As many of you may know from the Xpress’ coverage, the Type-A Mom Conference—basically a convention for “mommy bloggers”—recently took place in Asheville. It was a chance for blogging moms of all kinds to get together and share information, network and generally have a good time. Now that it’s over, what did the participants actually think of the conference? Vlogger/blogger ExtraordinaryMommy finds out.

One of the more interesting local video series to pop up recently is Into the Heart of the Monster, which documents the voyage across America undertaken in 2006 by Asheville residents Ben Shirley and Jonathan Dudley. But this is no average cross-country trip! Over the course of 68 days, the intrepid duo biked all the way across the country. Here’s the prologue to their adventure.

Here’s a cool little video that features a different side of skateboarding. No fancy tricks, no special lenses exaggerating every movement, no brash punk sound track insisting that riding a plank of wood with wheels on it will make you into an inherently cool person. Instead, as Sunny Keach presents it, skateboarding actually looks like a rather chill thing to do.

If you grew up in the 1980s and early ‘90s, chances are you’ll recognize every piece of this medley by instrumental rock group Lotus, recently performed at the Orange Peel. Should you have an ultra-geeky Triforce tattoo, you’ll probably be kicking yourself for missing the show.

And we close with a sarcastic visual commentary by YouTube user Ralph Roberts about the escalation of the conflict over Woodfin annexation. The weapon? “Zeb Vance Mk I antiWoodfin rocket,” of course.

Each week, dozens upon dozens of interesting local videos are uploaded to YouTube. It’s a lot to keep up with. Did we miss a particularly interesting, recently uploaded local video? Share it by leaving the videos URL (but not the embed code) in the comment fields below. Also, please mark it Not Work Safe if there’s any controversial content to the video.

  1. Howdy. I just discovered your column. Loved that Sunny Keach skateboarding video.
Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5Dnjl5CfPc
It’s a short business profile of the local costume company Organic Armor. Video made by Rod Murphy (who is completing the Mickey Mahaffey movie). Paul Hersey (my husband) talks about making his amazing sculptural costumes.
