Brevard-based nonprofit Transylvania Community Arts Council celebrates 24 years of Arts-in-Schools, a program featuring annual residencies, performances, study guides, after-school arts, a student art show and the volunteer-led Take Art to Heart.
Take Art to Heart volunteers provide eight monthly lessons to an assigned class of elementary school students. Lessons include art history, elements and principles of art, critical thinking and subject or period themes — all reinforced with color art reproductions, discussions, games and activities.
“Take Art to Heart is a vital program,” says teacher Jennifer Cunniff. “First, it’s wonderful that members of the community care enough to share their time. My volunteer … uses art to teach comparison and contrast, counting and new vocabulary for journaling. Across the board it’s excellent.”
“It’s wonderful,” agrees Louise Stroupe of Brevard Elementary. “The volunteer makes art come alive. Students look forward to it. They learn about art and math, the effects of light, the mood of a picture, about artists’ lives … . They learn a new awareness and perspective on things.”
Transylvania Community Arts Council is currently seeking new Take Art to Heart volunteers. An informational meeting for prospective volunteers will be held Monday, Aug. 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. Volunteers do not need a background in art. To register for the meeting: 884-2787. Info: www.tcarts.org.
