I saw the [Molton] cartoon [”Asheville 11,” Dec. 15 Xpress] the other week and had no reaction. This past issue I read two letters addressing both sides of the “Asheville 11” situation. As someone who has a dog in this hunt, I think the random violence was adolescent behavior.
I am out my deductible and an afternoon to get the windows replaced because these malcontents decided it would be fun to attack a parked car and break out the back and side window. Way to go, kids.
If you want sympathy, do not take it out on innocent citizens. Deal with your authority issues with the authorities, not regular folks.
I do not care if all of you go to jail or not — but we do have some litter around town that needs attention.

The December issue of Anarchist News Digest states: Last month, an appeal went out for solidarity actions to take place on the first day of every month in support of the Asheville 11.

Evidently nothing happened here on January 1, though, by the Asheville 11 supporters, whoever they are. Must a’been too cold for ‘em even with hoodies and face masks.
There is not a smidgeon of “integrity” to the actions of May 1st. It was merely a temper tantrum by adolescent minded miscreants. No more, no less, and is undeserving of any sort of “solidarity.”
The litter detail is an excellent idea.
Last night, somebody smashed the windows at Bender Gallery and Asheville Discount Pharmacy. There may be more I don’t know about.
Anyone know anything?
@ jim, i think it was probably someone robbing them like normal, dont worry the anarchists dont want to hurt the discount pharmacy… as for the bender that art IS ugly but, i doubt that this was a planned attack on asheville.
@Larry, you like alot of people in Asheville, or at least online are still missing the essential point, the 11 people arrested havent been convicted, there doesnt seem to be any evidence against any of the individuals and no one was caught in the act… so why be such a cheerleader for jail time before you know if those arrested are the ones who broke your window
the 11 people arrested havent been convicted, there doesnt seem to be any evidence against any of the individuals and no one was caught in the act
And yet that doesn’t stop people from trying to make them and their alleged or non-alleged or alleged-non-alleged actions some sort of act of political defiance.
Bill, what people are you talking about? A small fringe of folks you never even met? Who told you that? Where in the world are you getting that information?
And yet that doesn’t stop people from trying to make them and their alleged or non-alleged or alleged-non-alleged actions some sort of act of political defiance.
Well, of course because the Asheville 11 are completely, totally, utterly, undeniably innocent of all charges but if they did do it, it was awesome and the victims deserved it.
@Lucy:
You asked, “…so why be such a cheerleader for jail time before you know if those arrested are the ones who broke your window?”
Well, I will explain to you why. Because he doesn’t care if innocent people go to prison. He states that specifically. He doesn’t care, because he considers anyone who subscribes to weird ideas to be “litter.” This prejudice is obvious. If you are a freek, you will get no sympathy from him if you are haphazardly rounded up off the streets for a crime that happened earlier somewhere nearby. Why? Because you are probably not like him. Thus, he has no “dog” in the “fight” to look out for your rights. Life is a dogfight, you know, and an oddball is fair game for abuse and ridicule, as is obvious from the stupid opinions I often hear about the Asheville 11 and from the Molton cartoon that I wrote a letter to the editor about already. This letter is specifically in response to the letter I wrote.
Wow Larry.”I think the random violence was adolescent behavior.” Really? Random violence? If you had described the actions accurately – random vandalism – I could take you seriously. As a victim of both violence and having my car windows broken out, I can tell you that paying the deductible to get my windows fixed was pretty minor. If all it takes is some broken windows to get you to write to your local paper, you must be furious about the actual violence that is fomented with your tax dollars. What about actual, significant destruction like mountaintop removal and the erosion of our clean air and water? So sorry for your inconvenience at the hands of misguided fools. But violence? Um, no.
