I agree with many of the other [online commenters]: It’s absolutely inexcusable that a local company and/or artist was not employed to do this job. It almost certainly would have been cheaper, would have looked better and lasted longer, would have put money into the local economy, and would have been far easier to fix had there been a problem. The TDA should be ashamed of itself for not even considering local options for this job.

Thanks for reading through to the end…
We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
The TDA and the Chamber of “Commerce” have a long track record of outsourcing their promotional materials and projects to firms that are not from Asheville …. it is ironic, because both seem to tout the artistic nature of the area … would be a good story for Xpress to dig into.
The TDA is a disgrace. Their ineptitude has brought emberassment to the entire county. Time to clean house.
I’ll volunteer to fix the signs.I’ll do it for $10 an hour with my own paint, sweat and reflective tape. The buck stops in the River Arts district. I want to show the people of Asheville that artists are hard working, innovative and proud to call this place home. John Payne, our patron saint put his money where his mouth was and created the Wedge-the heART of the RAD.
It should have been a collective effort of various
types of artistic signage with common sizes by local artists! It really IS shortsighted by SOMEBODY???
Why weren’t local sign companies used? Because yankee transplants have moled their way into our city and county government and choose companies from the home states up in the northeast. Remember a few years back when a new city planner was gotten from Boston MA? How much further can you get from local Southern culture here?
I am all in favor of keeping the planning and everything else about Asheville LOCAL. Let these peeling signs be a reminder.

Than Boston? Well, a lot further, if you must ask.Ever been to Dubai? Or Florida?
