Letter from the editors

Dear reader:

Welcome to the new, improved Mountain Xpress. Every week, we strive to give you the latest, greatest news-and-arts coverage our area has to offer. That commitment never changes, but beginning this week, a number of other things have.

Under the skilled hands of our production and design staffers, Xpress has revamped the paper from front to back. Turn a few pages and you’ll see the result: A cleaner, leaner look, making it easier than ever to follow the wealth of local information we cram into our pages.

We’ve also taken the opportunity to recast some of our key features. For example, our local-news briefs section is no longer called Buzzworm. Now it’s simply The Buzz (as in the buzz about town), and that’s what you’ll continue to find there.

But wait, there’s more: This issue includes two brand-new features for your reading pleasure. Inside The Buzz, you’ll find The Biz—a weekly installment by staff reporter Hal L. Millard that will spotlight local business news. There’s also the print debut of Edgy Mama, a parenting column by Anne Fitten Glenn that’s found fans online since we launched it on our Web site last month.

So dig in and enjoy—and thanks for reading.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
