Conscious advertising preferred

I have been a fan of your paper for years and I am just getting to know your wonderful Web site. I think you are doing a huge disservice to your readers and to our community by allowing certain advertisements to be displayed on your Web site.

Google-generated advertisements that feature such glamorous proclamations as “mountaintop acreage” or “Live at your own private estate!” really disgust me! How about this one: “1,100-acre gated mountain community Asheville/Black Mountain, N.C. area.” I actually clicked on this ad and almost threw up on my keyboard when a John Muir quote popped up on the developer’s home page. The legendary preservationist, who founded the Sierra Club, is no doubt rolling over in his grave as we rush to cover our mountains with second and third homes.

Does the Mountain Xpress condone the building practices of these developments? Have we as a community become so money-driven that we must accept business from these developers? I say no! It is so easy to block these ads from your Web site and refuse to print them in your pages. Maybe, if you are unable to do so, many of the conscious businesses that advertise with you should consider other options.
