I was disappointed in the Valentine's photo spread in last week's Xpress [Feb. 10] for only representing heterosexual couples. Asheville is lucky to have a diverse and thriving GLBTQ community, and by choosing not to represent this community in these photos, Xpress is reinforcing a hetero-normative culture that isn't a true representation of our town. Show some love Xpress — all of it!

Thanks for reading through to the end…
We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
Chelsea, get your chick together and take some shots and send them in. Just let folks know if they are not family friendly and we will all wait for Chad to show up.
In all seriousness, do you really think heterosexuality is representative of the Asheville area??
not entirely– but i am in favor of the pics, lots of em’.
And so is homosexuality. It’s ok you won’t catch gay if you see the pictures.
Travelah re: “Chelsea… Just let folks know if they are not family friendly…”
I’m curious, Travelah. In your opinion, who must be included in a photo in order for it to be deemed a “family” photo? How many people and what gender(s) or combination(s) thereof? What is your definition of “family”? What do you mean by “family friendly”?
Betty, if you didn’t grasp what I was referring to, then who am I to explain such matters to a lady. It is best you remain innocent.
Why dont you answer the question, travelah? You said something, someone is inquiring what you mean, and now you insist on hiding behind shallow wit.
Are you going to do the right thing and answer, or are you going to say things without being able to back them up?
