Promoting worthy dialogue

I was just bowled over by Nina Smith’s thoughtful, articulate, and compassionate letter [“Fries With That?”, Feb. 14]. I was so impressed by the Mountain Xpress’ willingness to publish an opinion of such rare sentiment toward animal activists in this society that is increasingly hostile toward us. How pleasing to know that Ms. Smith will gladly devour, in a feeble attempt to “prove” a point, the flesh of animals who’ve been tortured in ways she can’t even begin to imagine, such as being boiled alive. Literally.

I am also glad the Mountain Xpress violated its own policies of letters to the editor by printing this one that clearly seeks to humiliate and blackmail two of the most dedicated people in the Asheville area. (In case you forgot, your policy states: “The Letters section seeks to promote thoughtful, diverse community dialogue.”)

How sad that someone can feel so threatened by the Davids that they would succumb to this; how pathetic that the Mountain Xpress feels [such a] need for sensationalism and tabloidism that it would lower itself to printing such drivel. You owe the Davids a sincere apology.
