UNCA could use a healthier plan

UNCA is now in the final stages of design and development of the proposed North Carolina Center for Health and Wellness. Supported by a grant from the N.C. Legislature, plans include a fitness center, lab space for research and classrooms for the burgeoning Health and Wellness Promotion [Program]. While these [features] appropriately address the goals of the project, important aspects have been left out.

In line with the mission of university and workplace wellness, staff, faculty and students of the UNCA community have continually asked for climbing-wall and dance-studio space. However, their requests have been sacrificed [in] the decision-making process, thereby threatening the well-being of the UNCA community.

Preliminary plans for the center included a climbing wall and dance studios, since excluded on the basis of lack of funding and lack of space. UNCA boasts an Outdoors Program and an overflowing Dance Program, each of which verifiably attracts prospective students to the small liberal-arts school. The university also prides itself on its Environmental Studies Department, though intentions of proper certification for long-term environmental responsibility have been excluded from construction plans.

Over 750 UNCA students have already signed a petition asking for a climbing wall on campus. As growing demands for a climbing wall, dance studio space and environmental responsibility are being made clear, it is the responsibility of the UNCA administration to respond and include these goals in their strategic planning.
