Along with more than 150 traditional workshops and seminars, six keynote speakers and hundreds of exhibitors, this year’s fair now features hands-on and extended workshops that dig deeper into an array of topics selected by the magazine’s editorial team.
Local fermentation expert Meredith Leigh will present a workshop on preserving food with the koji mold at the Mother Earth News Fair.

The Mother Earth News Fair returned April 9-10 to the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher, bringing to the area a host of workshops, demonstrations, vendors and exhibits related to homesteading, natural health, small-scale livestock production, renewable energy, gardening, green building and more.
Becky Crabtree describes her debut novel as a mix of romance and mystery with life in a small farming town as a backdrop for the theme of good versus evil. Drunk on Peace and Quiet takes place in West Virginia, but the author says it’s relatable to anyone with knowledge of life in the Appalachian Mountains, “Their truck tags may be different colors, but the church bazaars, the yard sales, the church politics and the power of mountain women are pretty much identical.”
More than 150 workshops and demonstrations will cover everything from fermenting vegetables to cheesemaking, basketry and soapmaking, living off the grid, getting the most out of a small garden and raising chickens.
