The paper’s staff as a collective received three awards, including first place for appearance and design. The 2020 general election voter guide — which was shaped by reader requests and received significant funding support from the community — bagged third place for public service.
Announced at the N.C. Press Association’s annual banquet in Raleigh on Feb. 27, Xpress’ wins also included a second-place finish in the General Excellence category for the state’s largest community newspapers and individual awards for five staff members.
Mountain Xpress collected 12 awards, including third place for general excellence among community newspapers with a circulation of over 10,000 in North Carolina, from the N.C. Press Association conference in Raleigh on Feb. 22.
In the 2011 North Carolina Press Association awards, Mountain Xpress earned recognition for six stories, projects and publications, including two first-place awards.
Two sizable collaborative projects — a multimedia package on the Burton Street neighborhood and the seven-part series “Worldwide WNC: Locals Going Global” — get the nod from the North Carolina Press Association
