Beloved musicals and new original works fill area stages this month.
Local theater troupe The Cardboard Sea returns to the stage for the first time since the pandemic hit. Plus, Ole Shakey’s is back at a new location, the Flatiron Writers Room goes hybrid, and The Captain’s Bookshelf shuts down for good.
The play stars Cardboard Sea company members Kristi DeVille and Kirstin Daniel, with newcomers Stevie Alverson, Sam Yoffee and Travis Lowe, and there’s original music by Ryan Anderson of local self-described “basement arena rock” outfit Minorcan.
One of the nation’s fringier fringes celebrates its 17th year, Jan. 20-27.
Opening Saturday, July 6, at The Magnetic Theatre, Has Anyone Seen Ms. Ray? is all about things that go bump in the night. “It’s based loosely on Antigone,” Todd Weakley explains. “Except it’s like the writers of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ took a stab at it.”
Theatrical startup the Cardboard Sea debuts “If You Must” at the Magnetic Theatre on Thursday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Friday July 31, and Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.
