The play is a day in the life of women who are not allowed to dream of more, or aspire to better lives. Some accept it, some protest it. There is no sense of their impending doom, which makes what is to come all the more unsettling.
Give!Local raised nearly $1,000 in its opening day and many of the nonprofits raised additional money at the kickoff event. Thirty nonprofits, their boards, two food vendors, three bands, a dinosaur and a ghost pepper all convened along with about 200 people from the public.

After an invitation from Heather Henson, local puppeteer Hobey Ford adapted his Legend of Sleepy Hollow-inspired production into a seven-minute short film. It premieres locally Thursday, Oct. 29, at The Magnetic Theater.
The Jacob Higginbotham Show, starring John Crutchfield, is onstage at The Magnetic Theatre through Saturday, Sept. 12, with performances Thursdays to Saturdays, at 7:30 p.m.
John Crutchfield’s latest play is built upon a small selection from a much larger unpublished work in prose called The Intimate Journals of Jacob Higginbotham. It runs at The Magnetic Theatre Thursday-Saturdays, Aug. 22-Sept. 12.
The Merchant of Asheville launches — after more than years of looking for a home — the grand opening production of The magnetic Theatre’s new space at 375 Depot Street (strangely enough, just across the street from its original building). The play’s first lines also sum up the theater’s mission statement.
“I don’t know that anyone has really written or produced a play about Asheville, per se — what [the city] is today, what the different populations are, what the economic situation is, how things are changing in relation to tourism and beer and everything else,” Magnetic Theatre’s artistic director Steven Samuels says. “That’s what this play is really all about.”
The Magnetic Theatre makes an official return to a permanent facility at 375 Depot St. in the River Arts District. It’s across the street from the space it left a little over two years ago. A soft opening features Brief Encounters, a series of one-act plays.
