Calendar highlights

Image 1. Winter wonderland: Step inside the Grove Arcade for an afternoon of twinkling lights and gingerbread houses. Entries from the National Gingerbread House Competition will be on display through Wednesday, Jan 2.

Image 2. A Christmas tradition: Black Mountain Center for the Arts will once again host Rediscovering Christmas, a theatrical performance featuring everything from ice fishing expeditions to blue-collar shepherds. Friday, Dec. 21 and Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Image 3. Japanimation: Soak in two hours of "geeky films and fun" with the Asheville Anime Club each Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Firestorm Cafe and Books.

Image 4. Trees galore: Start your own orchard with ECO's heritage tree sale. Apple, chestnut and persimmon trees will be available Monday, Feb. 11, but advanced orders are strongly encouraged.

Image 5. Beat the band: Travel back in time to the 1930s with the Asheville Jazz Orchestra. The group will bring its big band sound to White Horse Black Mountain Sunday, Dec. 30.

Image 6. Checkmate:  Pick up your pawn with the Asheville Chess Club on Wednesdays from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Or hone your strategy with the Smoky Mountain Chess Club Thursdays from 1-4 p.m.
