From Asheville Green Drinks:
Join Asheville Green Drinks for its 487th edition on Wednesday January 8th at 6PM at the Green Sage Coffeehouse and Cafe for a presentation on Landslides in Western North Carolina by Appalachian Landslide Consultants, PLLC Principle Geologist, Jennifer B. Bauer.
Jennifer Bauer is a licensed geologist and co-owner of Appalachian Landslide Consultants, PLLC. She started ALC in December of 2011, after working with the North Carolina Geological Survey’s Landslide Hazard Mapping team since 2005. Prior to working the state, Jennifer gained experience at an engineering consulting firm in Raleigh, NC, after getting her B.S. in Geology from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001. She is also Past President of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists, an international professional organization dedicated to applied geology. Jennifer has over 12 years of engineering geology experience and is passionate about applying that experience to help protect the lives and property of the citizens of western North Carolina.
Landslides are a natural part of the ever-changing topography of Western North Carolina. Most of them are triggered by heavy rain events that saturate mountain soils. However, many people who live in WNC are not aware of the hazards presented by landslides, where they occur, and how to avoid being impacted by them. With population growth in the region, development continues to climb higher up the slopes. Taking landslide hazards into account during development can avoid or prevent future impact by landslides and the high costs to life, property, and the environment associated with them.
On Wednesday, Licensed Geologist Jennifer Bauer will speak about landslides in Western North Carolina. She will talk about what we know about them, the rain events that have triggered them, and where they often occur. She will discuss the increase in landslides on human modified slopes in recent years. You will also learn about resources available to you to protect yourselves from these natural and man-made hazards.
**PLEASE NOTE** The Green Sage Coffeehouse and Cafe is transitioning into their winter hours. They will close to the public at 5 PM but will still offer Green Drinks attendees food service until 5:30 PM. Please plan accordingly if you would like to purchase dinner. Thank you.
