Carolina Public Press: Buncombe posts highest population growth in WNC

“With an increase of more than 6,100 people in two years, Buncombe County posted the highest population growth in the 18-county [Western North Carolina] region,” Steph Guinan reports for Carolina Public Press. “The increase is largely a result of relocation,” she adds, noting that most of those relocating are not coming from Florida. As outlined in maps and graphs, Buncombe’s growth exceeded 2.5 percent — just slightly higher than North Carolina’s overall 2.3 percent growth, but significantly higher than surrounding counties.

The biggest population decline occurred in Graham County — which is also one of the region’s poorest counties.
